Two sets of documents present different identities. The digitised registers held by public archives are used here as the reference source. They are compared with copies photographed in the municipal archives of Rochemaure. The differences are not limited to the surname: they also concern dates, given names, occupations, places of residence and, in some cases, parentage.
- 1698–1761 : A family line consolidated by contemporary parish records.
- 1814 / 1816 : The clearest discrepancy: two birth dates for Jean André Cheynet.
- 3 levels : Public source, divergent copy or material gap.

How to read this summary
Whenever possible, each entry links to the corresponding document. A discrepancy does not, by itself, identify who made a change or when it was made: those questions must remain separate from the material comparison of the records.
What our research adds
Four findings that are now better established
The earlier family line is documented without a nobiliary particle
Nine parish-record facsimiles now make it possible to trace a working family line from 1698 to 1761. Spellings vary — Chainet, Chaynet and then Cheynet — but none of these contemporary records includes “de Beaupré”.
View the detailed ancestryJean André Cheynet is the pivotal case
The record held by the Ardèche Departmental Archives dates his birth to 22 July 1814. The municipal copy shown on this site places it on 31 December 1816 and adds given names, the nobiliary particle and a different social status for his father.
Compare the two recordsThe changes go beyond the surname
In several records, a farmer becomes a lawyer or landowner, a housewife becomes a woman of independent means, and origins or family relationships are expanded. The comparison must therefore cover the entire content of each record, not only “de Beaupré”.
Later accounts are contradicted by civil-status records
Jean Eugène Cheynet married in 1871 and his wife lived until 1897, which is incompatible with the claimed London marriage in 1896. His death at Bessèges in 1917 also contradicts the account that he died in the sinking of L’Afrique in 1920.
