Two society directories

Le Tout Lyon. First published in 1902, this directory listed families belonging to Lyon’s social circles. Its earlier titles — Annuaire des salons à l’usage des gens du monde, then Annuaire de la haute société de la région lyonnaise — make its purpose clear: the pages discussed here belong to a society directory, not a press article.[6]

Bottin mondain. Published annually since 1903, initially by Didot-Bottin, it contains family entries. Its pages include both noble and bourgeois families and record the presentation supplied for individuals, their marriages and their social position.[7][9]

Historical and sociological research treats these directories as instruments of sociability and social recognition, in which applications for inclusion, family connections and relationships with people already listed could all play a part.[8][10]

For the purposes of this page, an entry establishes that a particular name and description appeared in a particular edition. Publication in a society directory does not, by itself, prove a line of descent or the authenticity of a title. What is documented here is the presentation printed by the directory, to be compared with the other records in the case.

Louise Cheynet in Le Tout Lyon, 1985–1987

In the edition filed in the case records under the year 1985, Louise Cheynet, née Guérard, appears with the description “Comtesse”. A second entry presents Jean-Marc Cheynet de Beaupré and his wife.[1]

A letter addressed to Louise Cheynet on 16 November 1986 uses the words « bottin mondain ». Its writer refers to the difference between the son’s name and his mother’s, then writes:[2]

« j’ai eu tort de t’y aligner sur nous »

This passage documents an intervention in the published family presentation. The letter does not, however, expressly identify Le Tout Lyon and is not a request for deletion sent to the publisher.

In this section of the 1987 edition, Louise’s entry no longer appears, while Jean-Marc’s remains.[3] The comparison establishes this difference at that point in the directory; by itself, it does not document the action that produced it.

The page contains two family entries under the same name.[5] “Cte” and “Ctesse” are the printed abbreviations for « comte » and « comtesse ». The other abbreviations are not expanded here without the key supplied in the 1990 edition.

The letters “ANF” appear in the second entry; their presence does not replace an admission record issued by the association. See the page dedicated to the Association d’entraide de la noblesse française. The form “PUSTIANAZ von PRIEL” is reproduced as printed and is examined on the page Pustianaz and “von Priel”.
